Viva Las Arepas (Two Locations)

Arepas were virtually unknown in Las Vegas until Venezuelan native and veteran Strip chef Felix Arellano launched a kiosk that grew into a permanent spot near the Strat in 2011. It became an institution, collecting fans including Neon Feast participant Kim Owens, owner of Main St. Provisions.

“Viva Las Arepas is one of my favorite quick and delicious bites in the city,” Owens said. “Some favorites are the wood-fired chicken and roasted pork arepas. They are both extremely crave-able paired with a black bean and cheese empanada and a side of fried plantains. I also can’t ever leave without my fix of a guava and cheese pastelito.”

If you remain among the uninitiated, arepas are thick cornmeal pancakes topped or filled with meats, beans or cheeses. The beef and chicken are roasted on site, and other options include shredded beef, garlic shrimp, cheese, black beans and cheese and vegetarian.

Arellano also offers his wood-fired meats as whole or half chickens or parts, beef, pork spareribs or a mixed grill. Five varieties of empanadas also are available, as are tostones, rice and fried yuca root.
