Cugino's Deli & Pizza
Considering the … ahem ... mob history of Las Vegas you might expect the place to be dotted with Italian delis. Yet we actually have very few, and Cugino’s is one. And it's top-notch, according to survey respondents including Branden Powers (the Wizard of BadAssery who created The Golden Tiki and Evel Pie).
Cugino’s, which is across the street from the main entrance to UNLV, draws plenty of students for its New York-style pizza – especially as part of a lunch special. But the place makes other goodies in house as well, such as Italian sausage, mozzarella, Italian cookies and bread (which is baked fresh daily). It also serves stellar arancini, pasta dishes, calzones, pepperoni rolls, garlic knots, cannolis in two sizes and Italian ices. Italian tripe and escarole and bean soups are other specialties.
And of course there are sandwiches. Try the Donnie’s Special (named for the owner), a flavor riot of chicken cutlet, mozzarella, roasted red peppers, red onions, lettuce, olive oil and balsamic vinegar, or the Tony Soprano, with capicola, provolone, vinegar peppers and balsamic vinegar. Or a Parmigiana sandwich – veal, eggplant, meatball, chicken or sausage.
There’s also an extensive grocery section, so you can take it all home.
